Description: Founded in 1872 and incorporated as a city in 1879, Anniston was a company town, built by the Woodstock Iron Company. In fact, the town was not opened for general settlement until 1883. Anniston was the first city in Alabama to be lighted with electricity in 1882 and enjoyed the convenience of telephones as early as 1884.
Description: Glencoe is part of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area that covers all of Etowah County. The city is partly located in Calhoun County, which was founded on December 18, 1832, as Benton County, and partly in Etowah County, which was founded on December 7, 1866. It is also known as the "City Of Patriotism."
Description: Hobson City, on the date of its organization, July 20, 1899, became the second municipality in the South composed exclusively of colored people, upon whom developed solely the right and duties.
Description: Jacksonville was founded in 1833 on land purchased from Creek Indian Chief "Du-Hoag" Ladiga. First called Drayton, it was renamed to honor President Andrew Jackson in 1834. There are a few Civil War monuments in town, including a statue of Major John Pelham in the city cemetery and a statue of Gen John H. Forney in the middle of the square. Jacksonville served as the county seat for Calhoun County until 1899 when it moved to Anniston. Jacksonville State University was founded here in 1883.
Description: In preparation for the Battle of Talladega, Andrew Jackson used the area around Ohatchee to prepare. It was at this battle that Andrew Jackson found an Indian boy next to the body of his mother. Jackson adopted the child, naming him Lyncoya Jackson. Lyncoya died of tuberculosis in 1828 at the age of sixteen.The site of the battle is marked with a large stone marker along Alabama Highway 144 between Alexandria and Ohatchee, Alabama near Tallaseehatchee Creek.
Description: Founded in the early 1850's, Oxford was the first city in Calhoun County to be incorporated. When the town was formed, it was originally named Lick skillet. The name was later changed to "Oxford" due to the presence of a narrow crossing of the Chocolocco Creek that allowed farmers to ford cattle from one side of the creek to the other. Since 1970 Oxford has annexed large amounts of land to the south, including the communities of Coldwater and Bynum. In 1970 it was all in Calhoun County but today it includes areas in Talladega County.
Description: The area now known as Piedmont is a community that began in the early 1840's, located at the crossroads of two early post roads. Piedmont is also home to the Chief Ladiga Trail.
Description: Southside was first settled in 1850 as a small rural community with townships such as Green Valley, Cedar Bend, and Pilgrims Rest, and the town of Southside was formed when they banded together. Early Southside's dominant source of income was farming.
Description: Anniston Army Depot was originally conceived as an ammunition storage site in the isolated northeast Alabama foothills of the Appalachian Mountains before the United States' entry into World War II. It has since grown to encompass a variety of maintenance and storage missions that keeps the U.S. Army ready to fight worldwide. With more than 6,000 people currently working on the depot, it is one of Alabama's single largest employers.

Description: Calhoun County, Ala., was created on 1832 Dec. 18 from ceded Creek Indian Territory. It was originally named Benton County in honor of Thomas Hart Benton. The county seat was established in Jacksonville in 1833. On January 29, 1858, the name was changed to Calhoun County in honor of John C. Calhoun (South Carolina). The county seat was moved to Anniston in 1899.
